Socio-Economic Inequality – (Open for discussion)
Hi Everyone
I just wanted to explain a bit more into detail what I meant last week when bringing up Socio-Economic Inequality. It stems from the recent tragedy of the Orlando Mass LGBT Shooting which after sparked huge
support from many people and events in commemorating the people that tragically lost their lives and the families that were affected.
The event in particular I would like to bring up is the Tony Awards which is the big Broadway theatre awards hosted each year. The ceremony this year was in dedication to the people who died in the shooting and had the message of being able to live up to whatever dream you have no matter who you are.
This brings up the idea of something like theatre being open to everyone but not necessarily in some cases.
The example I would like to talk about comes from the biggest Broadway show of the year which is a musical called Hamilton. This musical has a diverse cast of people from many different ethnicities showing equality between people of different races in the theatre industry.
Unfortunately, many people are unable to see Hamilton because of it’s astronomical ticket prices which can be in the region of $1,000 to $7,000 (£675.61 to £4,730.05) due to tickets being resold by 3rd party sellers who increase the price due to popularity. This, however, means for the vast majority of people it would be too expensive to see the show.
This brings the idea of Socio-Economic Inequality as theatre is open to everyone no matter who they are but can also exclude people of any gender, race or sexual orientation as most people can’t pay this much on luxuries such as theatre tickets, even at regular prices theatre can be too expensive with West End prices ranging from £15 to £150, not including the price of dinner and merchandise.
Furthermore, this idea can also be linked with other forms of entertainment like sports which can be too expensive to go see like theatre, which means people are excluded from some types of events like football matches.
I was bringing this up as more of a discussion and the ideas people had on the subject as I feel it can be important to look at things which bring people together but sometimes indirectly push people away as well.

Mr Mumuluh is very keen to run an assembly – Obai has offered to support
In response to Obai’s question about the potential risk at pride, Henry encouraged people to still ‘step outside their front door’ even in the light of these risks as we need to challenge the fears created by people performing terrorist actions.
Pride Uniform
Jack identified that many Year 11 students would be reluctant to come if they had to wear their school uniform.
Chris put forward his ‘identity’ idea. Henry expressed that our banner would show who we are.
It’s important to Ms Critchley that we are in uniform in order to show that we are part of a school.

Today’s Agenda
KC’s Meeting with NA
Minutes
- KC explained our proposal that we we remove any reference to lines in hair from our behaviour/uniform policy. After some discussion, no agreement could be made and NA expressed the idea that LG and Mr Bull will not agree to this either.
- KC explained our proposal that we add the correct options to log racist, homophobic, gender discriminatory, religious discriminatory and disability discriminatory incidents. After explaining the reasons for removal in the first place, NA agreed. NA also expressed concerns that teachers do not log incidents properly.
- KC explained that we wish to remove some ambiguous statements from our behaviour policy. NA says he’s happy to consult with students on his in future but that Mr Bull will bring his own policy that NA has. KC asked to read the policy but NA said we would need to wait until LG have seen it when Mr Bull arrives.
Student members disappointed about the lines in hair policy and wish it was easier to talk to leadership. Members happy for KC to email NA with the incident categories list. Members expressed wish to speak to new head.
The New Head Communications Committee
As a result of the meeting between NA and KC in which we realised we must communicate our ideas to Mr Bull better we prose a group being responsible for this. Freddy, Christina, Leon, Mr Waugh, Ms Murphy, Matthew, Jack and Ms Critchley have agreed to be this group. Mr Waugh will arrange it.
No Filter
Ten people have come to video themselves this week. We need more. Mr Waugh and Ms Critchley have promised to do it. KC- “Well done to the students who participated in the assembly. You spoke beautifully and it was great to see and five members of my form already want to participate.”
Proposal to Vote for Mr Atherton To Attend The Equalities Group
Some agree because he has a lot of pastoral responsibility which important. Others think it would be scary to have him present. We must discuss this again.
Inviting people to Pride
We should do this by inviting people to the equalities group in the first instance. Sending emails, talking at parade all proposed. Form tutors should be asked to support this.
Expanding our reach
We could communicate with similar groups at other schools. With Skype or meet ups. Discussion to be continued.

Obai- Will bring up hairstyles at JLT
Schuil- Pride has been paid for. The route has been changed. We start at Portland Place and finish at Whitehall
Mr Leonard- Asks the pride video people to wait behind at the end to arrange their first meeting
Today’s Items
Jack- Let’s do a fun outing for equalities group
Obai- Some what people say that black people can’t be LGBT. Why? Add to next week’s agenda
Review of incidents in April– three racist and one homophobic incident. Sexist incidents do not seem to be appearing this time. Possibly because it has been recently added.
How can we get teachers to take note of these incidents
Some racist and homophobic incidents are unseen by teachers
How can we help teachers to be more vigilant or to see more? Work positively with teachers more. Perhaps students are less likely to do it in front of teachers who they know are attached to the equalities group. Worth further discussion.
Jack- Lets invite people to the equalities group before pride
