  • Jack Elderton
  • Ms Lucking

Actions from last week:

  • ML Organising the meeting for the video people
    • Mr Leonard: we will make a sign in the shape of a speech mark using #nofilter – then removed to reveal – each person talks about the thing they don’t want to have to hide. People volunteering: Waugh, Obai, Lethaniel, Ms Critchley, Mr Leonard.
  • KC Meet Mr Atherton regarding behaviour policy – Has not yet been able to do this. Obai spoke to Mr Atherton and he says that

Last Week:

  • Incidents – encouraging teacher actions and recording on minor incidents.
  • Pupil education.
  • Organising Equalities Group Trip.
  • Exploring the “Black people can’t be LBGT” idea – Leon used RuPul as an example of a black ethnic person who has achieved great success as a drag queen. Michael in reference to the idea of ‘black community’ said that in his experience this can relate to the area of London people are from. He said that people in Peckham didn’t have a homophobic attitude.

This Week:

  • First Women’s group happened. Three actions were devised:
    • Run an assembly using the ‘like a girl’ campaign.

Minutes 28th April

Apologies

Miss Lucking

Review of last week’s minutes

Obai- Will bring up hairstyles at JLT

Schuil- Pride has been paid for. The route has been changed. We start at Portland Place and finish at Whitehall

Mr Leonard- Asks the pride video people to wait behind at the end to arrange their first meeting

Today’s Items

Jack- Let’s do a fun outing for equalities group

Obai- Some what people say that black people can’t be LGBT. Why? Add to next week’s agenda

Review of incidents in April– three racist and one homophobic incident. Sexist incidents do not seem to be appearing this time. Possibly because it has been recently added.

How can we get teachers to take note of these incidents

Some racist and homophobic incidents are unseen by teachers

How can we help teachers to be more vigilant or to see more? Work positively with teachers more. Perhaps students are less likely to do it in front of teachers who they know are attached to the equalities group. Worth further discussion.

Jack- Lets invite people to the equalities group before pride

Minutes: Thursday 21st April

Apologies
Alistair
Mr Waugh
Barney
Jack
Ms Wilberforce
Pride update- Ms Schuil
We need to pay before we are allowed to register. Karen Powell has been asked to arrange this by Friday
Theme this year is #nofilter. We want to focus on being ourselves. Decided to make a group video to this effect that we could send in to the Pride people.
Encouraging other schools to do similar things would be great and a video is a nice way of doing this.

Actions- Obai(happy to help upload it to ) Christian (slide shows) Matt Leonard and Mathew.
All to meet in the next week once our place is confirmed.

Behaviour Policy Queries

KC recited and the group voted unanimously to confirm the sections of the policy which we wish to consult Mr Atherton over. Mr Atherton has agreed to meet Ms Critchley early next week. Highlighted in paper form but in summary group agree that the meeting is to discuss the removal of ambiguity around what is a minor and major offence and the fitting sanctions for this but also to query the difference between offences against staff and students. Remove/Amend the statement about phones but some of this falls into student council remit really. KC to pass on these sections to Student Council and JLT via Cath Wilberforce, Obai and Reiss Amoah.

Obai- Islamophobia is not on sims. Could we add religious predjudice/religion based bullying? KC will ask.
Henry- wishes for us discuss lines in hair too- potentially student council remit too. Obi will pass on.

Matters arising from actions from last meeting

Womens Group

Jamal will help Dominic to set up Women’s Group Meeting as he didn’t get chance to speak to everyone this week. Obai assures us Ms Lucking is ready to sort it out for first week after half term.

Subversive Communication

Jamal invited to attend meeting in first week after Easter.

This week’s agenda

Pride- Jack

Jack requested friends of his attend pride. Friesia expressed concern this may be in breach of guidelines. Rob offered idea that the guests could line the parade and join us later. This sounds like a nice compromise to most of group. We could officially make those people part of our equalities LNS community. Friesia offered to speak with Chris and Pride London to confirm stance.

Behaviour Policy

Questions about ambiguity of statements.

Questions about sanctions matching up with offence.

Do homophobic statements end up with leadership involvement? Some group members felt this was more appropriate some expressed concerns this would simply silence the conversation. It was agreed we should work towards consistently applied sanctions for acts or verbalisations of prejudice and not increasing the sanctions for them.

Obai questioned some sanctions and how they could be applied unfairly.

Rob explained that referral is made by leadership only Rob added that added that there are no automatic sanctions for behaviours it simply sets up a conversation.

Kate expressed concerns that changing the whole behaviour policy right now may fall outside of our Equalities remit and that it would be beneficial to focus on the aspect we’ve talked about most which is preventing LGBTQ, Gender Identity, Disability or Ethnic Background from becoming a barrier to learning.

Continual raising of different acts of prejudice holding different levels of severity by teachers, staff, students and union groups has not yielded consistent results so far. Disability bullying should be on SIMS. Action – Kate will check the behaviour policy, SIMS and log and report to JLT via Obai.

Noted that the records are getting better.

Assembly on consequences for prejudice proposed. Some agreed but majority stated they wish to send out positive messages to prevent shutdown of conversation.

Ms Schuil said that we must still work on taking repeat offenses seriously. Propose actions next week.
Acts of prejudice should not be on the strike system. Obai will take to JLT.

Equalities Objectives:

Chris Hall, Governor, explained the concerns the Governors had about the equalities objective – the idea of committing ourselves to everyone achieving the same outcomes was potentially unrealistic. Henry also reiterated Mr Taylor’s concern about how to identify and track the various groups.

  1. All school documents and curricular resources reflect the diversity of the wider school community.
    • We can be much more inclusive with resources and how we position them towards gender, religion, sexuality and ethnicity in language and representation. For example: We should not present Mr and Mrs as our default in letters, not simply choosing a male scientist when making a PowerPoint slide/handout.
  2. Regular audits of school behaviour incidents reflect a reduction in bullying and harassment of identified groups within the school and track trends in broader behaviour to ensure specific groups are not over-represented.
  3. Equality training is run annually for all staff and regular events are run on the school calendar that promote positive messages about all members of the diverse school community.

To be amended:

Progress for students who come from minority groups within the school (Multi-ethnic, LGBT, diverse religions, different genders) is monitored

Alternatives:

  1. Interview students who are under-achieving – there was some concern that students wouldn’t disclose information, or would feel shame about
  2. Speaking to parents – the concern here was that some students might not wish to disclose issues they’re having that may affect their learning
  3. The re-stating of the objective in terms of a broader intention would allow the leadership to build more specific goals to achieve them.

Proposed Wording:

Option 1: “The school will make progress towards ensuring that progress for students who come from minority groups within the school is not affected by their minority status”

Option 2: “The school will ensure that students’ minority status doesn’t become a barrier to their academic progress” – carried unanimously.

Minutes 11/02/2016

Apologies

Mr Waugh – At UCL giving a lecture

Barnaby- at Art coursework session

Ms Warsame- sick

Ms Lucking – another appointment`

(some apologies missing from minutes so I apologise)

Chair and Minutes – Ms Critchley

Agenda

  • Report from Obai on JLT
  • Positive image for women
  • LGBTQ workshops on offer to us

JLT

Obai- snapchat problem videoing people to pass on to other people. Meeting with SLT about lunch cards being on show at all times to ID people and allow JLT members to write SIMS  comments.

Jamal- phone removal was well deserved. Boys were stupid and they lost a privilege.

Women and positive images

Jamal- needed clarification of last weeks agenda. Agreed the problem is how women are being treated differently. Positive imagery not enough. Sanctions required.

Miss Murphy- questions girls dress code and whether or not one exists. States she feels there needs to be one as boys see it as unfair which might promote resentment.

Henry- we never speak about the objectification of women. Informal assembly suggested about repercussions of engaging in sexually objectifying conversations. Male led preferably as boys will respond better to this. Objectification should be addressed. And harassment is to be defined.

Obai- positive image- imagine she is your mum. integrating the women into the community more.

Christian- proposing a change in uniform policy for girls. Thinks it’s right to enforce the one that exists in planners.

Jamal- worried we are enforcing the idea that they should dress better to receive respect. Male teachers can encourage it. Named male teachers who he states have encouraged it.

Henry- the male role models should stand up for women. agreed with Ms C’s link to He for She campaign.

Jack- larger than anything we have taken on before. Struggle to see moral side of things. Cultural shift required. Points out that women are not treated so well but are in society, a majority not a minority

Henry- not everyone is female. Everyone has a race or sexuality. It’s making things harder.

Dominic- Sexism is seen to be funny. “I banged your girl”

Ms Critchley- would like to invite boys to take part in an assembly on not seeing women as possessions rather contributors to society! generally thinks it might help if women were in front of kids at assemblies more.

Jamal- harassment of other girls. Heard some boys who talked about our Y10 BFI project say “What does she expect? She’s come into a boys school.” When girls claimed to have been harassed.

Jack- Points out that sexism affects all of us. Try to get a better connection will the school community by pointing out how they are at a disadvantage if the inequality persists.

Freddie- maybe we could do an assembly on objectification of men

Christian- if we flipped it- imagine it. If the boys were being treated badly.

Jack- too hard to make there be less of a difference between men and women with so many men in the school. Attack gender stereotypes.

Ms Schuil- thinks of American dress codes. Poor excuse to make girls dress better.

Jack- zero interaction with women is a problem

Freddy- “what have we gained with gender stereotypes?”

Henry- don’t be a girl. Bothers us.

LGBTQ Workshops on offer from Lambeth

Michael- doesn’t see many boys taking it on. (the offer of the support group for LGBTQ young people)

Henry- wants to see what they are proposing in more detail and would want them to work in collaboration with the group. Concerned that students often see external workshops as free day and hence don’t engage.

Jack- Would like to see where they are coming from and be allowed to read the email about the project’s goals. Concerned their message might marginalise people more.

Pips went!

Next week’s agenda

Deciding our role in how to promote positive image for women (had to cut conversation short)

Minutes: 4 February 2016

Apologies: Emily (late), Obai, Michael, Mr North, Jack.

Chair: Ms Critchley

Topic: The Objectification of Women.

Henry: the misogyny in the school affects the way young men relate to women outside the school.

Barnaby: Definitely notices the difference in the way the female students are treated: everyone focuses attention on them, noises and jeering

Mr Leonard: Some students think their attitudes are warranted due to the fact they believe the women are inviting it through how they’re addressed

Henry: It comes across in the language as well – “My ting” – the idea of women being the possession of women.

Alistair: Fundamentally being a single sex school is a problem, the lack of contact with girls and women affects the boys experience – this isn’t an excuse though. One approach would be to turn it into a mixed school.

Ms Critchley: Argues that it’s not so important what happens in other schools. Curious about how women are treated differently in the school.

Barnaby: The teachers don’t seem to be as subject to the sexist behaviour as the support teachers and 6th form women.

Henry: Poor behaviour seems to happen more in classes taught by women.

Dewi: There’s a general lack of respect for female teachers in school – a marked difference between this and how men are treated. Mentioned that in Science, the atmosphere is different between the way male and female students are regarded.

Mr Leonard: Referred to a supply teacher as “I’d do her”.

Ms Lucking: talked about the Year 7 students and how they seem to regress when they arrive in the school. Some students wondered if this was a consequence of coming from a single sex environment.

Alistair: One of the first notable things about the school that there were no female students and that this inferred that there was a barrier between boys and girls.

Ms Lucking: Went to a girls’ school, and recalled the sense of difference she felt between girls and boys. She felt she was taught that women could be very empowered.

Ms Critchley: When she went powerboat driving and was teased that she crashed the

Mr Howeld: One of the biggest problems is that these issues are not properly addressed – the problem is leaving this alone.

Alistair: When the main exposure to women is through the media, this can have a problematic effect on people’s perceptions.

Ms Bennett: Teachers can override these preconceptions through taking a strong clear stance

Mr Howeld: The students are not framed as ‘gentlemen’ in the school – this is something that’s not encouraged.

Ms Lucking: Remember not to be overwhelmed by the negativity.
