KC: we must celebrate though- our work and Mr Waugh’s work and all the teachers we’ve been speaking too have finally listened. PSHE will be a subject taught next year!

Agenda: planning for Curriculum meetings

The team spent thier penultimate session prepping to meet HODs about their curricula. Geography, Science, Maths, English, History all underway.

Plans for next week:

Finish our planning and assign teams to each department. Discuss how we approach teachers and when.

Minutes 27th April

Apologies:

Mathew, Mr North

Agenda:

A diverse curriculum which promotes equality. We have already decided to team up with all HODs willing to help us build into thier curriculum moments which celebrate diversity.

Ms Critchley produced several copies of a document which contained points for discussion around how, why and with what we could improve subject curricula. We split into three groups and started to note our ideas so that we can approach relevant HODs with our ideas. Photos of these completed documents to follow!

Minutes 5th January

Many members were missing today as we had a rooming issue. We were joined by a new member, Tyrese Flectcher who contributes to our discussion on how to ensure our cause is adequately represented in PSHE lessons.

Halal food

Mr North had to postpone a meeting due to illness so this is still I. Progress. Obai and Mr North are on this.

Ms C and Jamal discussed increasing the profile of equalities group at school but also teaming up with other schools perhaps through Lambeth youth council.

We discussed the need for better education about our causes and that pshe lessons should be better and include some of our work.

The meeting concluded abruptly due to new lining up procedures. We'”” plan better next week.

Minutes 12th January 2017

Mr North- he has an ear infection

Matthew- has a meeting

Caleb- private matter

Dewi- Jamal is sure he’s sorry but doesn’t actually know where he is

Mr North and Mr Bull

Discussion postponed until Mr North’s return

PSHE curriculum

Many memebrs who were misinformed about the location of last week’s meeting discussed what PSHE is. They concluded that they had not experience this at LNS.

Ms C proposed speaking to Mr Goldsmith about his plans for PSHE since he made some progress when Y9 had an assembly by Brook on sexting and the law this week.

Jamal is working on a PSHE curriculum with Lambeth Youth Council and would like us to help him understand what students need and want from this.

Next week we will name some topics we’d like to see included from our equalities group position. Obai proposed we help develop approaches to these topics too and the year sevens said we could plan tutor time lessons.

Ms C explained what Y9 have been up to and will share their Year plan with the group who also think Mr Goldmsith should see it.

We propose having Mr Goldmsith join us for a meeting when we are prepared to present our findings and requests

Minutes

School Trips Funding

Meeting hasn’t yet taken place. Ms C will rearrange. Does it include trips to the theatre? Twelfth night. Dion will join the meeting because he’/ going on a trip with Mr Curran which he had to pay for. Aiming Tuesday lesson 3.

Disability Discrimination:

People refusing to sit next to an autistic student. Spam, retard, using special needs as an insult. Using the SENs someone has as an insult or telling them to go down a set when people get a question wrong. Paolo revealed a case of bullying of a boy who he knows has a condition or disability which people tease. Ms C will investigate the accusations here.

We discussed how this type of bullying could effect us. Lowers peoples confidence, boys getting quieter, feeling bullied, self confidence can be damaged very easily and shows in exams and in personality, it’s easier to believe negative things than positive things. Albion expressed his hope that he has made a difference to Y7 self confidence. Lethaniel would like to seek advice from Mr Durant on educating Mr Students. Paolo knows a lot about autism spectrum conditions as his mum works with students who have them and he’d like to educate or students about them.

We digressed here and moved onto bullying (particularly of year sevens) by older students.

Bullying from older students

Dion reflects that many of the kids in his year were bullied by older students from Y7 Y8 and Y9. Students lose confidence in the teacher capacity to do something about it when we don’t log things or make students feel like they aren’t important. Could we advise teachers on how to respond?

Minutes 24th November 2016

Apologies

Ms Murphy (rolling apology until Christmas)

Ms Lucking

Agenda

  • Ms Dearden’s Resignation
    • Freddy Summarised Leon’s account of why Ms Dearden was resigning and his understanding of it
    • Leon explained that he felt it wasn’t fair which is why he brought it to the equalities group meeting. He wants posters or assemblies to send a message.
    • Ms Dearden explained that the reason for her resignation was that she felt the serious incident was dealt with inappropriately and not as seriously as Ms Dearden felt it needed to be taken.
    • Obai felt like the assemblies related to it were about attitude rather than condemning sexual harassment
    • Generally among the student members the feeling was that content of assemblies has been too vague
    • Several students worry about students protecting each other from consequences makes the schools culture worse
    • Some students expressed concern for female staff and all students
    • Things taking too long to be addressed and not repeating the messages consistently was Dewi’s concern
    • Ms Critchley expressed her feeling that it is not within the equalities group remit to deal with this incident directly but we can work on changing the school culture and attitude towards women and attitudes on physical boundaries in general. Mr North later seconded this when students felt passionately that they wanted to help.
    • Jamal has an essay on cat calling with some relevant statistics and will forward this to Ms Critchley for publication on the equalities group site. It will open peoples eyes and he feels the stats speak for themselves.
    • Ms Schuil feels like incidents of sexual harassment should be treated as harshly as theft. This needs to start with staff taking it seriously.
    • Albion proposed regular and repeated education on this issue and other issues.
    • Next week we will check how each of the equalities group roles can contribute to action here

We did not make it to further agenda points but Dewi did (hurriedly) call for action regarding an Assembly for Y9. Margaret would like boys input on instances of homophobic bullying.

  • Meeting with Mr Bull
  • Equalities Statement – Has been passed to Mr Durant by JN.
  • Y9 Assembly
  • Thabit’s Sexist Issue (Thabit was absent and so could not report on this.  JN will speak to Thabit about this issue).

Hair- Henry

Obai spoke to JLT is is arranging a meeting with Mr Bull. Henry will attend  it but not arrange it!

Max got let back into lessons the day after he write the piece and that was pleasing. No clear place where the hair policy is displayed. Ms Schuil- It is not an unnatural colour so it seems an overreaction. Mathew Q had blonde tips and no one said anything. How does hair affect your education? It’s with you all week. We are concerned with inconsitancy. Why isn’t it said to staff.
